Overview

Chulu Far East Peak Climbing (6,059 meters) offers a perfect introduction to Himalayan mountaineering in the breathtaking Annapurna region of Nepal. This 19-day expedition, curated by Summit Nepal Adventure, combines scenic trekking through the Annapurna Circuit with an exciting non-technical peak ascent that’s ideal for both novice and intermediate climbers. Nestled just above the Ngawal village in the Manang Valley, Chulu Far East provides stunning views of the Annapurna Massif, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, and beyond to the Tibetan plateau.

Your adventure begins in Kathmandu, followed by a drive to Chamje, where the trek kicks off. The trail weaves through lush forests, terraced farmlands, and traditional villages, gradually ascending into alpine terrain. After acclimatizing in Ngawal, you leave the main trail to head toward Chulu Far East Base Camp, where the mountain reveals itself in full glory. The summit day is the high point—literally and figuratively—as you ascend glacier and snowy ridges with fixed rope support to reach the peak. The journey doesn’t end there; it continues across the legendary Thorong La Pass (5,416m) and descends to the sacred temple town of Muktinath, followed by a scenic flight out of Jomsom. This expedition offers a rare blend of Himalayan trekking, cultural exploration, and climbing achievement in one unforgettable package.

Best Time for Chulu Far East Peak Climbing
The optimal time for Chulu Far East Peak Climbing is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) trekking seasons. These months offer the most stable weather, clear skies, and safe climbing conditions. Spring brings warmer daytime temperatures and the lush beauty of blooming rhododendrons and alpine flowers, enhancing the overall trekking experience. Snow conditions on the mountain are typically stable, making it a good time for safe climbing and excellent summit visibility.

Autumn, meanwhile, follows the summer monsoon and brings crisp, dry air with some of the best visibility you can experience in the Himalayas. The trails are less muddy, and weather systems are more predictable, significantly improving summit success rates. In contrast, winter (December to February) brings heavy snow, and monsoon (June to August) has frequent rain and poor trail conditions, making these seasons less favorable for both trekking and peak climbing. Summit Nepal Adventure only operates this expedition during the best months to maximize safety, comfort, and your chances of a successful summit.

Chulu Far East Peak Climbing – Difficulty
Though considered one of the more “accessible” trekking peaks in Nepal, Chulu Far East (6,059m) still presents a serious physical and mental challenge. The climb requires a good level of fitness, stamina, and the ability to handle altitude. The trekking portion involves long daily walks, steep ascents, and elevations above 5,000 meters. The summit day, in particular, can take 8 to 9 hours, often in freezing temperatures and thin air. Previous high-altitude trekking experience is recommended, but not mandatory for determined and fit adventurers.

Climbers will need to use crampons, harnesses, ice axes, and fixed ropes—especially on summit day, which includes glacier travel and snowy ridge walking. However, the climb is classified as non-technical, meaning no prior rock or ice climbing experience is strictly required. Our guides provide a detailed pre-climb training session at High Camp to prepare you for the final ascent. The itinerary includes acclimatization days in Ngawal and Manang, giving your body time to adjust to the altitude and greatly reducing the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). With the support of Summit Nepal Adventure’s experienced climbing Sherpas, your climb is not only achievable—it’s unforgettable.

Trip Itinerary

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, a representative from Summit Nepal Adventure will warmly welcome you and transfer you to your hotel. After check-in and a brief rest, you’ll meet your climbing guide for a comprehensive briefing on the Chulu Far East expedition. The evening is free to explore the vibrant streets of Thamel or enjoy a traditional Nepali dinner.

The journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar, transitioning from cityscapes to terraced hills and rural villages. From Besisahar, a rough but adventurous jeep ride continues to Chamje, a small village nestled along the Marsyangdi River. This is where your trek officially begins the next day.

The trail winds through beautiful sub-tropical forests, crossing several suspension bridges and cascading waterfalls. Passing through the villages of Tal and Karte, you’ll gradually ascend to Dharapani, a significant stop where several trekking routes, including the Annapurna Circuit, converge.

Today’s trek climbs steadily through pine forests and alpine landscapes. As you gain altitude, you’ll be treated to increasingly dramatic views of the Annapurna range. Chame, the administrative headquarters of Manang District, offers excellent mountain views and comfortable lodging.

The trail continues through dense forest and past apple orchards, following the Marsyangdi River valley. Upon reaching Pisang, you’ll witness the landscape transitioning into a drier, more alpine terrain. The views of Annapurna II and Pisang Peak dominate the skyline, offering the perfect backdrop for your night’s stay.

A scenic and culturally rich route leads you to the high village of Ngawal, taking the upper trail for better acclimatization and sweeping mountain views. The village, known for its old Buddhist monastery and panoramic vistas, is perched high above the valley, offering a peaceful and spiritual setting.

To properly acclimatize before heading into higher elevations, you’ll spend the day in Ngawal. Optional hikes to surrounding viewpoints or short climbs toward Ghyaru offer additional altitude gain. The rest of the day can be spent exploring the ancient monastery and enjoying the tranquility of this traditional village.

Leaving the village behind, you ascend steadily toward Yak Kharka. The trail becomes more rugged, and you’ll start to notice the thinning vegetation and changing climate. Along the way, you may spot grazing yaks and blue sheep, with stunning views of Chulu peaks and the Annapurna range.

A challenging but exciting day takes you to the base camp of Chulu Far East. The trail climbs above the tree line into high alpine terrain. Upon reaching base camp, your guides from Summit Nepal Adventure will set up camp and prepare all the climbing equipment. You’ll receive a safety briefing and basic technical instruction for the upcoming ascent.

Today involves a relatively short but steep ascent to High Camp, located on a ridge with spectacular views of Annapurna II, III, IV, and Chulu East. Once at High Camp, you’ll spend the afternoon resting and reviewing essential mountaineering techniques, including rope work, crampon use, and ice axe handling. Early dinner and rest are essential to prepare for the summit push.

Summit day begins before dawn. Roped up and guided carefully across snow and icy terrain, you’ll ascend to the summit of Chulu Far East. At 6,059 meters, the summit offers a breathtaking panorama of the Annapurna range, Manaslu, Gangapurna, and Tilicho Peak. After taking in the views and capturing photos, you’ll descend all the way back to Ngawal, where a warm meal and well-earned rest await.

After the exhilaration of the summit, today’s trek is a more relaxed descent to the beautiful town of Manang. The path is scenic, dotted with ancient chortens, grazing yaks, and small alpine settlements. Once in Manang, you can explore the town’s cultural highlights, including the local monastery and Himalayan Rescue Association clinic.

Leaving the comforts of Manang behind, you continue along the Annapurna Circuit trail toward Yak Kharka once again. This gradual ascent passes through stark but beautiful terrain, offering yet another opportunity to enjoy the mountain wilderness and prepare for Thorong La Pass.

Today’s short but important trek brings you to the base of Thorong La Pass at Thorong Phedi. This windswept outpost provides a final staging point for crossing one of the world’s highest trekking passes. You’ll rest early in preparation for tomorrow’s early morning departure.

The highlight of the Annapurna Circuit, Thorong La Pass, awaits today. Starting early, you’ll make a slow, steady climb to the top, where colorful prayer flags mark the pass. From here, you’ll descend into the Mustang region to reach Muktinath, a revered pilgrimage site sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists.

Descending through the arid landscapes of Mustang, you pass through the ancient village of Kagbeni before reaching Jomsom. This windy town is the administrative hub of Lower Mustang and the endpoint of your trekking journey. Celebrate your achievement with your team and enjoy your last night in the Himalayas.

A short scenic flight brings you from Jomsom to the lakeside city of Pokhara. Upon arrival, you’ll check into your hotel and spend the rest of the day relaxing or exploring the city. Pokhara’s serene environment and spectacular views of the Annapurnas provide the perfect contrast to the high-altitude adventure you’ve completed.

After breakfast, you’ll drive back to Kathmandu, passing through river valleys, terraced fields, and charming towns. Once in the capital, you’ll be transferred to your hotel for a well-deserved rest. In the evening, Summit Nepal Adventure may host a farewell dinner to celebrate the successful expedition.

Depending on your flight schedule, you may have time for some last-minute shopping or sightseeing in Kathmandu. A representative from Summit Nepal Adventure will escort you to the airport for your departure, bidding farewell after an unforgettable Himalayan experience.
