Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, a representative from Summit Nepal Adventure will warmly welcome you and transfer you to your hotel. After check-in and a brief rest, you’ll meet your climbing guide for a comprehensive briefing on the Chulu Far East expedition. The evening is free to explore the vibrant streets of Thamel or enjoy a traditional Nepali dinner.
The journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar, transitioning from cityscapes to terraced hills and rural villages. From Besisahar, a rough but adventurous jeep ride continues to Chamje, a small village nestled along the Marsyangdi River. This is where your trek officially begins the next day.
The trail winds through beautiful sub-tropical forests, crossing several suspension bridges and cascading waterfalls. Passing through the villages of Tal and Karte, you’ll gradually ascend to Dharapani, a significant stop where several trekking routes, including the Annapurna Circuit, converge.
Today’s trek climbs steadily through pine forests and alpine landscapes. As you gain altitude, you’ll be treated to increasingly dramatic views of the Annapurna range. Chame, the administrative headquarters of Manang District, offers excellent mountain views and comfortable lodging.
The trail continues through dense forest and past apple orchards, following the Marsyangdi River valley. Upon reaching Pisang, you’ll witness the landscape transitioning into a drier, more alpine terrain. The views of Annapurna II and Pisang Peak dominate the skyline, offering the perfect backdrop for your night’s stay.
A scenic and culturally rich route leads you to the high village of Ngawal, taking the upper trail for better acclimatization and sweeping mountain views. The village, known for its old Buddhist monastery and panoramic vistas, is perched high above the valley, offering a peaceful and spiritual setting.
To properly acclimatize before heading into higher elevations, you’ll spend the day in Ngawal. Optional hikes to surrounding viewpoints or short climbs toward Ghyaru offer additional altitude gain. The rest of the day can be spent exploring the ancient monastery and enjoying the tranquility of this traditional village.
Leaving the village behind, you ascend steadily toward Yak Kharka. The trail becomes more rugged, and you’ll start to notice the thinning vegetation and changing climate. Along the way, you may spot grazing yaks and blue sheep, with stunning views of Chulu peaks and the Annapurna range.
A challenging but exciting day takes you to the base camp of Chulu Far East. The trail climbs above the tree line into high alpine terrain. Upon reaching base camp, your guides from Summit Nepal Adventure will set up camp and prepare all the climbing equipment. You’ll receive a safety briefing and basic technical instruction for the upcoming ascent.
Today involves a relatively short but steep ascent to High Camp, located on a ridge with spectacular views of Annapurna II, III, IV, and Chulu East. Once at High Camp, you’ll spend the afternoon resting and reviewing essential mountaineering techniques, including rope work, crampon use, and ice axe handling. Early dinner and rest are essential to prepare for the summit push.
Summit day begins before dawn. Roped up and guided carefully across snow and icy terrain, you’ll ascend to the summit of Chulu Far East. At 6,059 meters, the summit offers a breathtaking panorama of the Annapurna range, Manaslu, Gangapurna, and Tilicho Peak. After taking in the views and capturing photos, you’ll descend all the way back to Ngawal, where a warm meal and well-earned rest await.
After the exhilaration of the summit, today’s trek is a more relaxed descent to the beautiful town of Manang. The path is scenic, dotted with ancient chortens, grazing yaks, and small alpine settlements. Once in Manang, you can explore the town’s cultural highlights, including the local monastery and Himalayan Rescue Association clinic.
Leaving the comforts of Manang behind, you continue along the Annapurna Circuit trail toward Yak Kharka once again. This gradual ascent passes through stark but beautiful terrain, offering yet another opportunity to enjoy the mountain wilderness and prepare for Thorong La Pass.
Today’s short but important trek brings you to the base of Thorong La Pass at Thorong Phedi. This windswept outpost provides a final staging point for crossing one of the world’s highest trekking passes. You’ll rest early in preparation for tomorrow’s early morning departure.
The highlight of the Annapurna Circuit, Thorong La Pass, awaits today. Starting early, you’ll make a slow, steady climb to the top, where colorful prayer flags mark the pass. From here, you’ll descend into the Mustang region to reach Muktinath, a revered pilgrimage site sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists.
Descending through the arid landscapes of Mustang, you pass through the ancient village of Kagbeni before reaching Jomsom. This windy town is the administrative hub of Lower Mustang and the endpoint of your trekking journey. Celebrate your achievement with your team and enjoy your last night in the Himalayas.
A short scenic flight brings you from Jomsom to the lakeside city of Pokhara. Upon arrival, you’ll check into your hotel and spend the rest of the day relaxing or exploring the city. Pokhara’s serene environment and spectacular views of the Annapurnas provide the perfect contrast to the high-altitude adventure you’ve completed.
After breakfast, you’ll drive back to Kathmandu, passing through river valleys, terraced fields, and charming towns. Once in the capital, you’ll be transferred to your hotel for a well-deserved rest. In the evening, Summit Nepal Adventure may host a farewell dinner to celebrate the successful expedition.
Depending on your flight schedule, you may have time for some last-minute shopping or sightseeing in Kathmandu. A representative from Summit Nepal Adventure will escort you to the airport for your departure, bidding farewell after an unforgettable Himalayan experience.
The Chulu Far East Peak Climbing expedition is a 19-day journey that combines classic trekking in the Annapurna region with an exhilarating climb to one of Nepal’s accessible trekking peaks. Beginning with a scenic drive to Chamje via Besisahar, the trek follows a section of the famous Annapurna Circuit through lush valleys, alpine forests, and traditional villages like Pisang and Ngawal. After adequate acclimatization in Ngawal and Yak Kharka, the route ascends to Chulu Far East Base Camp and High Camp before the summit attempt. Following the climb, the descent route continues over Thorong La Pass (5,416m) and ends in Jomsom, from where you'll fly to Pokhara and return to Kathmandu. This itinerary offers a perfect mix of cultural immersion, high-altitude trekking, and mountaineering.
Chulu Far East Peak (6,059m) is considered a moderately difficult trekking peak, ideal for adventurous trekkers seeking to gain mountaineering experience. While the climb involves glacier travel, snow slopes, and the use of climbing gear such as crampons, ropes, and ice axes, it is not overly technical. With basic instruction and support from our experienced climbing guides, those with strong physical fitness and prior high-altitude trekking experience can safely attempt the summit. Summit Nepal Adventure provides pre-climb training at High Camp to prepare climbers for the final push.
Summit Nepal Adventure provides comprehensive logistical, technical, and personal support throughout the journey. From your arrival in Kathmandu to the summit and return, all arrangements are taken care of—transportation, accommodations, meals, permits, porters, and professional climbing guides. Our guides are certified by the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), highly experienced in peak climbing, and trained in high-altitude safety. Emergency oxygen and first aid are available, and our team monitors your health daily. Group climbing equipment is supplied, while personal gear can be rented in Kathmandu upon request.
The best seasons for climbing Chulu Far East are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These months offer clear skies, stable weather, and favorable snow conditions for both trekking and climbing. Spring brings colorful rhododendron blooms, while autumn boasts excellent mountain visibility and dry trails. Winter climbs are possible but involve harsher weather and lower temperatures, making them suitable only for experienced mountaineers.
During the trek, you’ll stay in local teahouses and lodges, which offer basic but clean accommodations with shared facilities. In Kathmandu and Pokhara, comfortable 3-star hotels are provided with breakfast. At Base Camp and High Camp, tented camping is used with meals prepared by our expedition cook. The food during the trek includes a mix of Nepali, Tibetan, and Western dishes such as dal bhat (rice and lentils), soups, pasta, noodles, eggs, and vegetables. We ensure you receive three nutritious meals per day and boiled or purified drinking water.
Yes, altitude sickness is a potential risk on any climb above 3,000 meters, and the Chulu Far East itinerary reaches altitudes over 6,000 meters. Summit Nepal Adventure mitigates this risk by following a gradual ascent profile with dedicated acclimatization days in Ngawal and Yak Kharka. Our team uses pulse oximeters to monitor your oxygen levels, and our guides are trained to detect early signs of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). In case of severe symptoms, we implement emergency evacuation protocols, including helicopter rescue if necessary.
Yes, all required permits are arranged by Summit Nepal Adventure and are included in the cost of your trip. These include:
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)
Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) card
Chulu Far East Peak Climbing Permit (issued by the Nepal Mountaineering Association)
