Overview

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a breathtaking adventure that circles the majestic Mount Manaslu—the 8th highest peak in the world at 8,163 meters (26,781 feet). Located in the remote Gorkha district of Nepal, this trek offers raw natural beauty, rich cultural encounters, and fewer crowds compared to the more commercial routes like Everest or Annapurna. It follows the ancient salt-trading route along the Budhi Gandaki River and ascends to the dramatic Larkya La Pass at 5,160 meters (16,929 feet).

What sets the Manaslu Circuit apart is its blend of diverse ecosystems, ethnic cultures, and awe-inspiring Himalayan views. From steamy lowland forests and rice terraces to arid alpine landscapes and glacial moraine, the terrain constantly shifts. The region is home to Tibetan-influenced villages, ancient monasteries, and warm hospitality. It’s a trek that rewards those seeking solitude, authenticity, and raw Himalayan grandeur.

Why Trek the Manaslu Circuit?
The Manaslu Circuit is often described as a “hidden gem” of Nepal. For those looking to step away from the more crowded trails, this trek provides an immersive and off-the-beaten-path experience. It offers equally stunning—if not more pristine—views of Himalayan peaks like Manaslu, Himlung Himal, Ganesh Himal, and Annapurna II, without the heavy foot traffic found on the Annapurna or Everest routes.

Beyond the scenery, this trek is a cultural treasure. It passes through Nubri and Tsum valleys, where Tibetan Buddhism thrives, and where ancient customs, languages, and rituals are still preserved. You'll witness traditional mani walls, spinning prayer wheels, and intricate monasteries like Mu Gompa and Lho Monastery. It’s more than just a trek—it's a journey through Nepal's spiritual and cultural heartlands.

Best Time to Do the Manaslu Circuit Trek
The best time to do the Manaslu Circuit Trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. These months provide the most stable weather, clear skies, and comfortable daytime temperatures—ideal for trekking and enjoying the incredible mountain vistas.

In spring, rhododendron forests bloom in brilliant reds and pinks, while in autumn, post-monsoon clarity offers crystal-clear views and dry trails. Winter treks are possible, but crossing Larkya La Pass can be risky due to heavy snow and extreme cold. Monsoon season (June to August) is generally avoided due to slippery trails and landslides.

Permits Required for Manaslu Circuit Trek
Because the Manaslu region is classified as a Restricted Area, several permits are required to trek legally. These include the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP), Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP), and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). If you’re also visiting the Tsum Valley, an additional permit is required.

Summit Nepal Adventure ensures a smooth, hassle-free permit process by handling all the documentation on your behalf. Note that trekkers must be in a group of at least two and accompanied by a licensed guide—requirements that Summit Nepal Adventure arranges with ease, ensuring a safe and fully compliant trek.

Is the Manaslu Circuit Trek Difficult?
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is considered moderately to highly challenging, mainly due to its length, altitude, and remoteness. The trek usually takes 14–18 days and includes long daily walking hours, steep ascents and descents, and the high-altitude crossing of Larkya La Pass. Acclimatization is crucial, and rest days are built into the itinerary for gradual adaptation.

While physical fitness and mental endurance are important, the trail itself doesn’t require technical climbing skills. With proper preparation and guidance from experienced leaders like those at Summit Nepal Adventure, the trek is achievable for most trekkers with a good level of stamina. Our itineraries are carefully designed to maximize safety, acclimatization, and enjoyment.

Trip Itinerary

Your adventure begins with your arrival in Kathmandu, the vibrant capital of Nepal. A representative from Summit Nepal Adventure will greet you at Tribhuvan International Airport and escort you to your hotel. After check-in, you’ll have time to relax or explore the bustling streets of Thamel. In the evening, there will be a trek briefing where you’ll meet your guide and fellow trekkers, and review the upcoming journey around the majestic Manaslu region.

We begin the trek with a long but scenic drive from Kathmandu to the village of Maccha Khola. The road takes us out of the city and into Nepal’s rugged mid-hills, passing through terraced fields, river valleys, and rural towns. The final stretch is on a rougher road, adding to the adventure. After about 9 hours of driving, we arrive at Maccha Khola, a small riverside village where we rest for the night.

Today’s trek follows the trail along the Budi Gandaki River. We cross several suspension bridges and pass through small settlements like Khorlabesi and Tatopani (where there are natural hot springs). The trail winds through lush forests and steep ridges before a final climb brings us to Jagat, a charming village with stone-paved lanes and a traditional checkpoint marking the entry to the Manaslu Conservation Area.

Leaving Jagat, we walk through scenic villages like Salleri and Sirdibas before crossing a suspension bridge into Philim, a large Gurung village. The trail narrows as we move deeper into the gorge, entering a more remote and serene part of the valley. We continue through bamboo forests and cross several small streams before arriving in Deng, a small but welcoming village nestled against the hillside.

The landscape and culture begin to change today as we ascend higher into the mountains. The trail passes through rhododendron and pine forests, crossing the Budi Gandaki multiple times. We pass through the quaint villages of Rana and Bihi Phedi, where Tibetan influence becomes more visible in local attire and architecture. After a final climb through a dense forest, we reach Namrung, a quiet village with great mountain views and traditional stone houses.

This is a shorter trekking day, allowing you to enjoy the increasing beauty of the region. We trek through alpine forests and barley fields, passing through the village of Lihi with its chortens and prayer flags fluttering in the wind. Continuing along the trail, we eventually reach Lho, a picturesque Tibetan village with a majestic view of Manaslu and an impressive monastery overlooking the village.

We continue climbing steadily today, heading deeper into the mountains. The trail opens up to incredible views of Peak 29, Manaslu, and other snow-capped giants. Passing through Shyala village, we arrive at Sama Gaun, a traditional settlement of stone houses and yaks grazing in the surrounding pastures. This is our base for the next two nights as we acclimatize to the altitude.

To aid acclimatization, we’ll take a day hike either to Manaslu Base Camp (for those feeling strong) or to Pungyen Gompa, a remote and scenic monastery surrounded by glaciers. Both options offer spectacular views and help your body adjust to the high elevation. After soaking in the beauty of the Himalayas, we return to Sama Gaun for a second night.

Today’s trek is relatively short, giving you more time to rest and adjust to the altitude. The trail climbs gradually above the tree line, passing ancient mani walls and stunning mountain panoramas. We reach Samdo, a small Tibetan refugee village just a day away from the Tibetan border. The afternoon is free to explore or simply rest and prepare for the days ahead.

We take another acclimatization hike today toward the Tibetan border via the Rui La pass. The route is steep and challenging but rewards with unmatched views and a sense of remoteness. This hike not only prepares you for the upcoming high pass but also gives you a deeper appreciation for the cross-border culture and the vast Himalayan wilderness.

The trail today leads to Dharmasala, also known as Larkya Phedi, the final staging point before crossing the Larkya La Pass. The route climbs steadily with incredible mountain views and perhaps sightings of Himalayan blue sheep along the rocky slopes. We arrive at Dharmasala early in the afternoon to rest and prepare for the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek.

Today is the highlight of the trek as we cross the Larkya La Pass, one of the most dramatic and beautiful passes in Nepal. We start before dawn and ascend gradually, surrounded by towering peaks like Himlung, Kang Guru, and Annapurna II. From the top, the views are otherworldly. The descent to Bimthang is long but breathtaking, taking us into a new valley of icy rivers and pristine landscapes.

We descend through alpine meadows and lush forests filled with rhododendron and pine. The trail passes through beautiful villages like Tilije and Thonje before joining the popular Annapurna Circuit route at Dharapani. The air is thicker here, and the warmth of lower elevations is a welcome change after the cold of the high mountains.

After breakfast, we begin the long drive back to Kathmandu, transitioning from rugged mountain terrain to the rolling hills and bustling roads of the Kathmandu Valley. Once back in the capital, you can enjoy a warm shower, delicious food, and perhaps a celebratory drink to toast the completion of the Manaslu Circuit.

Your unforgettable journey with Summit Nepal Adventure comes to an end. Depending on your flight schedule, we will arrange a transfer to the airport for your departure. If you have time, you may choose to explore more of Kathmandu’s cultural sites or extend your stay in Nepal. Safe travels and namaste!

Summit Nepal Adventure ensures a gradual acclimatization schedule and provides experienced guides who are trained in altitude awareness and first aid, ensuring your safety and comfort throughout the journey.
