Overview

The Ghorepani Poonhill Trek is one of the most scenic short treks in the Annapurna region of Nepal. This trek is renowned for its breathtaking panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, traditional villages, and rich cultural encounters with the Gurung and Magar communities. At just around 3,210 meters (10,531 ft) at its highest point, Poon Hill provides an unforgettable sunrise experience over snow-capped Himalayan giants, making it an ideal trek for beginner and seasoned hikers alike.

Starting from Nayapul, the trail meanders through lush rhododendron forests, terraced farmlands, and charming mountain villages like Tikhedhunga, Ghorepani, and Ghandruk. The trek typically takes 4–6 days, allowing plenty of time to soak in the natural beauty and interact with the warm-hearted locals. This journey offers a perfect blend of nature, culture, and adventure in a relatively short time frame.

Why Trek the Ghorepani Poonhill?
Trekking the Ghorepani Poonhill trail is a rewarding experience that combines spectacular mountain vistas with deep cultural immersion. One of the most captivating reasons to choose this trek is the sunrise view from Poon Hill itself. As the first light of day hits the peaks of Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and Dhaulagiri, the entire landscape is painted in hues of orange and gold—an unforgettable sight for every traveler.

Additionally, this trek offers a gentler introduction to trekking in Nepal compared to more strenuous routes like Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit. It’s ideal for families, solo travelers, and those with limited time but who still want to experience the grandeur of the Himalayas. Along the way, trekkers get the chance to explore local customs, traditional mountain lifestyles, and historic stone villages, creating a well-rounded adventure that balances natural splendor with cultural richness.

Best Time to Do the Ghorepani Poonhill Trek
The best times to explore on the Ghorepani Poonhill Trek are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. During these months, the weather is generally stable, skies are clear, and mountain views are at their sharpest. Spring is especially vibrant as rhododendron forests—Nepal’s national flower—bloom in full color, creating a surreal environment.

Autumn offers equally stunning landscapes, with post-monsoon clarity revealing the full majesty of the Himalayas. The temperatures during these periods are moderate, making hiking more comfortable. While the winter months (December to February) are also possible, trails can be icy and temperatures chilly. Monsoon season (June to August) is generally avoided due to heavy rains and leech-infested trails.

Permits Required for Ghorepani Poonhill Trek
To legally trek the Ghorepani Poonhill trail, travelers need to secure two primary permits: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) card. These permits help fund conservation efforts and ensure the safety of trekkers throughout the region.

Summit Nepal Adventure will assist you with all necessary paperwork and ensure that permits are obtained hassle-free. The process typically requires your passport and a couple of passport-sized photos. With these permits in hand, you can enjoy the trek with peace of mind, knowing that you’re trekking responsibly and in compliance with local regulations.

Is the Ghorepani Poonhill Trek Difficult?
The Ghorepani Poonhill Trek is considered a moderate trek, making it suitable for people with a basic level of fitness. The trail involves several uphill and downhill climbs, especially the stone steps to Ulleri and the final ascent to Poon Hill, which can be challenging but are manageable with a steady pace and regular breaks.

No technical climbing experience is required, and altitude sickness is rarely an issue due to the relatively low maximum elevation. Summit Nepal Adventure provides expert guidance, allowing trekkers to acclimatize gradually and stay safe throughout the journey. With proper preparation, even first-time trekkers can complete the route and fully enjoy the beauty it offers.
