Overview

Pisang Peak Climbing (6,091 meters) is a remarkable adventure that blends the excitement of trekking in the Annapurna region with the thrill of Himalayan peak climbing. Offered by Summit Nepal Adventure, this 16-day itinerary takes you through picturesque villages, ancient Buddhist monasteries, and scenic landscapes before guiding you to the summit of Pisang Peak, one of the most popular trekking peaks in Nepal. Located just north of the Manang Valley and part of the Annapurna Circuit, Pisang Peak offers a stunning panoramic view of the Annapurna Massif, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, and the vast Marsyangdi Valley.

The adventure begins in Kathmandu and quickly transitions to the beautiful Annapurna region with a scenic drive to Chame. Trekkers gradually ascend through lush forests and alpine meadows to reach Pisang, from where the mountain becomes a dominant presence on the skyline. After acclimatizing and training at Base Camp and High Camp, climbers make a summit attempt with the guidance of experienced climbing Sherpas. Following the summit, the journey continues on the world-renowned Annapurna Circuit, crossing the challenging Thorong La Pass (5,416m) and finishing in the sacred pilgrimage site of Muktinath before flying out from Jomsom. This expedition offers a perfect balance of cultural immersion, scenic trekking, and alpine climbing in one of Nepal’s most iconic regions.

Best Time for Pisang Peak Climbing
The best seasons for Pisang Peak Climbing are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During spring, the trails are vibrant with blooming rhododendrons and other wildflowers. The temperatures are moderate at lower elevations, while the higher camps remain stable and relatively dry—ideal for climbing conditions. The clear skies offer excellent visibility for summit views and fewer weather-related risks, which is crucial for a safe and enjoyable expedition.

Autumn, on the other hand, is equally popular among trekkers and climbers. After the summer monsoon, the air is crisp, and the skies are at their clearest. The views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges are nothing short of breathtaking. The daytime temperatures are comfortable for trekking, and the nighttime conditions at high camp, while cold, are manageable with proper gear. Winter and monsoon seasons are generally avoided due to the high risk of snowfall, avalanches, and poor visibility, which can make the climb unsafe. Summit Nepal Adventure schedules all Pisang Peak expeditions during the most favorable months, ensuring the highest chances of success and safety.

Pisang Peak Climbing – Difficulty
Pisang Peak Climbing is rated as a moderately difficult expedition, suitable for trekkers who are physically fit and have some experience with high-altitude trekking. While technical climbing experience is helpful, it is not mandatory, as Summit Nepal Adventure provides basic training and full support before the summit push. The trekking portion of the itinerary involves long days of walking, significant altitude gain, and the challenge of crossing Thorong La Pass, which is a highlight of the Annapurna Circuit.

The summit climb itself involves snow and ice climbing, particularly from High Camp to the summit ridge. You will be using mountaineering gear such as crampons, ropes, harnesses, and ice axes, and fixed ropes are often used on the steeper sections. The altitude and exposure demand good cardiovascular fitness, mental toughness, and the ability to adapt to changing mountain conditions. Acclimatization days in Upper Pisang and Manang are carefully planned to help your body adjust. Our experienced climbing Sherpas will guide you every step of the way, ensuring safety and a rewarding summit experience.

Trip Itinerary

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, a representative from Summit Nepal Adventure will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in the heart of the city. After check-in, you’ll meet your guide for a detailed briefing about the upcoming climb. In the evening, enjoy some free time to explore the vibrant streets of Thamel or rest after your journey.

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive out of the Kathmandu Valley, heading west towards Besisahar. From here, a rugged off-road Jeep ride takes you through lush hills and mountain terrain to Chame, the district headquarters of Manang. This long but beautiful journey brings you closer to the towering peaks of the Annapurna range.

The trek begins today as you follow the Marsyangdi River through forests of pine and rhododendron. The trail ascends gradually, passing through traditional villages and offering impressive views of Lamjung Himal and Annapurna II. After around six hours of trekking, you’ll reach the charming village of Pisang, nestled in a wide valley surrounded by rugged cliffs and snow-capped peaks.

A short but steep hike brings you to Upper Pisang, a beautiful village perched above the valley with panoramic views of the Annapurna massif. You’ll have time to explore the local monasteries and acclimatize to the higher altitude. The traditional Tibetan-style houses and serene atmosphere of Upper Pisang provide a glimpse into the spiritual culture of the region.

Leaving the village behind, the trail climbs steadily toward Pisang Peak Base Camp. The route takes you through alpine pastures and rugged landscapes, with the air growing thinner as you gain altitude. Upon reaching base camp, your team from Summit Nepal Adventure will set up camp and begin preparing gear for the summit push. The afternoon is spent resting and undergoing basic climbing instructions.

Today you ascend to High Camp, located on a rocky slope closer to the glacier and summit route. The terrain becomes more challenging with loose rocks and steeper sections. Once at High Camp, your guide will go over rope techniques, crampon use, and safety protocols. After an early dinner, rest well in preparation for the big climb tomorrow.

Summit day begins in the pre-dawn hours with a gradual ascent over snow and ice. Roped up and led by experienced guides, you’ll climb steep sections and possibly use fixed lines as you approach the summit ridge. Reaching the top of Pisang Peak (6,091m) offers an unforgettable 360-degree panorama of the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Manaslu ranges. After celebrating the summit, carefully descend back to High Camp and then continue down to Upper Pisang for a well-deserved rest.

With the summit behind you, the trail leads westward toward the highland town of Manang. This section of the trek is both scenic and culturally rich, offering views of Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, and the turquoise waters of Gangapurna Lake. Manang is a lively village and a common stop for trekkers heading towards Thorong La Pass.

Today is reserved for rest and acclimatization. You can explore the local monasteries, visit the Himalayan Rescue Association’s aid post, or take a short hike to the Ice Lake or Chongkor viewpoint. This day helps your body adjust to the altitude in preparation for the upcoming high pass crossing.

Leaving Manang, the trail becomes more barren and windswept as you enter the upper reaches of the Marsyangdi Valley. A relatively short trek brings you to Chauri Lattar, a small settlement surrounded by dramatic rock formations and snowy peaks. This is another important acclimatization stop before crossing Thorong La.

A short but challenging hike leads you to Thorong Phedi, the base camp for Thorong La Pass. The altitude is noticeable here, so the rest of the afternoon is spent hydrating and resting. Your guides will provide a detailed briefing for the next day’s early crossing of one of the highest trekking passes in the world.

The highlight of the Annapurna Circuit, Thorong La Pass, is crossed today. Starting before sunrise, you’ll ascend a steep and often snow-covered path to the top of the pass. The sense of accomplishment at 5,416 meters is immense, with breathtaking views in all directions. After a brief celebration and photo stop, descend carefully to the sacred site of Muktinath, known for its eternal flame and spiritual significance to both Hindus and Buddhists.

The descent continues through arid landscapes and the Kali Gandaki River Valley to the town of Jomsom. This windy town serves as a transportation hub in the region and is known for its views of Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri. Enjoy your final night in the Annapurna region with a hearty meal and a warm bed.

A short scenic flight takes you from Jomsom to Pokhara, where warm weather and lush scenery await. Check into your lakeside hotel and spend the rest of the day relaxing by Phewa Lake, visiting local cafes, or exploring the charming town. It’s the perfect place to unwind after your successful climb.

After breakfast, a comfortable drive brings you back to Kathmandu through scenic river valleys and terraced hills. Upon arrival, you’ll check into your hotel and enjoy a celebratory farewell dinner hosted by Summit Nepal Adventure, marking the successful conclusion of your Pisang Peak adventure.

Depending on your flight schedule, you may have time for some last-minute shopping or sightseeing in Kathmandu. A representative from Summit Nepal Adventure will transfer you to the airport for your final departure, with warm wishes and memories of an unforgettable Himalayan experience.
