Overview

The Langtang Valley Gosaikunda Trekking is a stunning combination trek that brings together two of the most iconic destinations in the Langtang region: the scenic Langtang Valley and the sacred alpine lakes of Gosaikunda. This trail offers an enriching mix of breathtaking mountain views, diverse landscapes, and deep cultural and spiritual experiences. Stretching through Langtang National Park, this trek is less commercialized than the Everest and Annapurna regions, making it perfect for those seeking both adventure and tranquility.

The journey begins from Syabrubesi and follows the lush Langtang Valley to Kyanjin Gompa, nestled at the base of Langtang Lirung. After soaking in the views and visiting ancient monasteries, the route heads southward toward Gosaikunda, a collection of glacial lakes revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. The trek culminates at Lauribina Pass (4,610m), offering panoramic vistas of the Himalayas before descending to Chisapani or Sundarijal, making it a truly diverse and rewarding circuit.

Why Trek the Langtang Valley Gosaikunda Route?
This trek is ideal for those who want to experience the beauty of both high alpine terrain and cultural heartlands in one journey. You’ll trek through Tamang and Tibetan-influenced villages, interact with locals, and witness a lifestyle that has remained largely unchanged for generations. The trail is filled with monasteries, prayer wheels, and chortens that reflect the spiritual essence of the region.

The Gosaikunda Lakes themselves are a major highlight. Surrounded by rugged peaks and often partially frozen, the lakes are believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva, and thousands of pilgrims make the journey here during the Janai Purnima festival. For trekkers, the lakes provide a moment of quiet reflection and breathtaking beauty. Combined with the dramatic glacier views of Langtang and the challenge of Lauribina Pass, this trek is both spiritually moving and visually unforgettable.

Best Time to Do the Langtang Valley Gosaikunda Trek
The best seasons to undertake the Langtang Valley Gosaikunda Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These periods offer stable weather, clear skies, and the most vibrant landscapes. Spring is especially stunning with blooming rhododendrons, while autumn boasts crystal-clear mountain views and pleasant temperatures.

While it’s possible to do the trek in winter (December to February), heavy snow can make the Lauribina Pass difficult to cross and may block the trails to Gosaikunda. The monsoon season (June to August) is not recommended due to heavy rainfall, leeches, and cloud-covered mountain views.

Permits Required for Langtang Valley Gosaikunda Trek
To trek in this region, you’ll need two main permits:
  • Langtang National Park Entry Permit
  • Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Card
These permits help fund conservation efforts and ensure the safety of trekkers in the region. Summit Nepal Adventure will assist in securing all necessary documentation prior to the trek, making the process smooth and worry-free.

Is the Langtang Valley Gosaikunda Trek Difficult?
The Langtang Gosaikunda Trek is classified as a moderate to challenging trek. While no technical climbing is involved, the trek includes several steep ascents and descents, and the altitude can be demanding—particularly when crossing Lauribina Pass. Trekkers should be in good physical condition and mentally prepared for high-altitude hiking.

With Summit Nepal Adventure, trekkers benefit from a carefully planned itinerary that includes proper acclimatization days and rest stops. Our experienced guides are trained in altitude safety and first aid, and they pace the trek to match the group’s comfort and ability, making it manageable for most trekkers with a reasonable level of fitness.

Trip Itinerary

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, a friendly representative from Summit Nepal Adventure will be there to greet you and escort you to your hotel. After check-in, you can relax or explore the buzzing streets of Thamel. In the evening, you’ll meet your guide and receive a detailed briefing about the upcoming trek.

Today we leave Kathmandu behind and head north by private vehicle toward Syabrubesi, the starting point of our trek. The scenic drive takes around 7 hours and winds through terraced hillsides, forested ridges, and traditional villages. As we enter the Langtang region, distant views of snow-capped peaks begin to appear. We arrive in Syabrubesi, a peaceful village by the river, where we settle in for the night.

Our trekking adventure begins today as we follow the Langtang Khola (river) through lush forests of oak, rhododendron, and bamboo. The trail gradually ascends, crossing several suspension bridges and small streams. Along the way, keep an eye out for playful langurs and red pandas. After a steady uphill climb, we reach Lama Hotel, a quiet resting spot nestled in the forest.

We continue our ascent through dense woodland, with the trail offering glimpses of the Langtang Lirung range through the trees. As we climb higher, the forest thins and gives way to yak pastures and open meadows. After passing Ghodatabela, we make our way to Langtang Village, a traditional Tamang settlement rich in culture and recently rebuilt after the 2015 earthquake.

Today’s shorter trek leads us through yak pastures and across wooden bridges with soaring cliffs above. As the landscape opens up, we approach Kyanjin Gompa, a beautiful village surrounded by snowy peaks, including Langtang Lirung. After lunch, take time to explore the local monastery or visit the nearby yak cheese factory for a taste of local life.

Today is a rest and exploration day in Kyanjin Gompa. You can hike to Tserko Ri (4,984 m) for breathtaking 360-degree views of the Langtang Himalayas and neighboring Tibetan peaks. Alternatively, visit Langshisha Kharka or take a more relaxed walk around the valley. The day allows your body to acclimatize and gives you time to absorb the natural beauty and serenity of the Himalayas.

We retrace our steps back down the valley, passing familiar villages and enjoying the descent through rhododendron and pine forest. The route back to Lama Hotel offers a different perspective and allows time to reflect on the incredible peaks you’ve just visited.

Departing Lama Hotel, we take a new route toward Thulo Syabru, a lovely hillside village perched above the river valley. The trail descends at first, then climbs steadily through forested trails and terraced farmland. The village of Thulo Syabru is known for its warm Tamang hospitality and sweeping views of Ganesh Himal and the Langtang range.

We begin our climb toward the sacred Gosaikunda Lakes today. The trail ascends through oak and rhododendron forest, passing prayer flags and chortens along the way. After a steady uphill journey, we reach Sing Gompa, a peaceful hamlet with a small monastery and a local cheese factory. The air gets cooler here, and the mountains loom closer.

This is one of the most scenic and spiritual days of the trek. The trail climbs above the tree line with jaw-dropping views of the Langtang Himal, Ganesh Himal, and the Annapurna range. Eventually, we reach Gosaikunda, a sacred alpine lake revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. The turquoise waters set against a backdrop of snowy peaks create a magical setting.

We spend a full day exploring the Gosaikunda Lake and its surroundings. You can walk around the cluster of lakes in the area or hike to Surya Peak (5,145 m) for a challenging but rewarding climb. The spiritual and scenic atmosphere of Gosaikunda offers a deeply peaceful experience, perfect for meditation, photography, or quiet reflection.

After enjoying the morning serenity at Gosaikunda, we retrace our path down to Sing Gompa. The descent is easier on the lungs and gives time to appreciate the alpine views and the layers of forest we pass through again. This peaceful retreat in the woods is a perfect place to rest.

Our final trekking day descends through thick pine and rhododendron forests as we make our way to Dhunche, the district headquarters of Rasuwa. The trail winds down gently through peaceful landscapes before entering the bustling town. Tonight is your last evening in the mountains, a great time to celebrate your trek with your group and guide.

After breakfast, we board a private vehicle and drive back to Kathmandu. The 7-hour journey offers one last chance to enjoy the hills and rivers of Nepal before re-entering the busy capital. Once in the city, you’ll check into your hotel, clean up, and maybe treat yourself to a celebratory meal.

Your unforgettable Langtang Valley and Gosaikunda Trek with Summit Nepal Adventure comes to an end. Our team will transfer you to the airport for your departure, or assist with any onward travel plans. You leave Nepal with a heart full of mountain memories and a deep connection to the sacred Himalayas.
